Dental Crowns and Bridges
A broken or missing tooth can cause questions about the health and aesthetics of the smile. We offer wide-ranging solutions for broken, decayed and missing teeth at L&R Dental.
Dental crowns and bridges are related procedures that serve two very different purposes. Both will restore the beauty and function of patients’ smiles.
Dental Crowns to Protect Teeth
Broken and severely decayed teeth might need more protection than a bonded filling can provide. Enamel, which covers the softer dentin and nerve fibres in the tooth, also absorbs force from chewing. It is the hardest substance in the body. When the enamel is compromised, a dental crown can replace the natural enamel with a durable substitute.
Conditions that may benefit from a dental crown include:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Teeth with a root canal
- Deeply decayed teeth
- Misshapen teeth or teeth that do not blend with the rest of the smile
- Worn-down teeth
Dental crowns come in all-ceramic, metal-ceramic blends and metal alloy varieties. Which we choose depends on the needs and goals of the patient. We will go over the benefits and limitations of each.
Many patients prefer all-ceramic crowns due to their natural appearance and lack of metal components.
Comfortable Dental Crown Procedures
We know that some dental procedures cause anxiety. Toowoomba dentists Dr Leanne Welsh, Dr Rachael Milford and Dr Phoebe Fernando agree that patient comfort is a priority, and they all have a gentle approach our patients appreciate.
We will first anaesthetise the tooth before removing any decay or damaged structure. Preparing the tooth makes adequate space for the dental crown. We can also add to the tooth structure to support the crown, if necessary.
An impression will capture the size and shape of the tooth, making it possible for our local dental lab to design a crown that fits and functions comfortably. Dental technicians require a week or two to make custom restorations look and feel their best. We will cover your tooth with a temporary crown to protect it.
At your next visit, we will permanently seal the dental crown to your tooth and make any adjustments so that your teeth come together perfectly. This protects healthy jaw function and reduces sensitivity.
Your new crown will function like a natural tooth as long as you care for it properly with good home hygiene and regular check-up and clean visits.
Dental Bridges to Close the Gap
A dental bridge relies on one or two healthy teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. By placing a dental crown with attachments on adjacent teeth, we can suspend an artificial tooth in place. This not only restores the appearance of the smile but the bite as well, and it keeps remaining teeth from shifting.
Dental bridges require a little extra care to ensure that gum disease does not develop. We will talk about special brushes and floss to make cleaning around your bridge much easier.
A dental bridge is a reliable alternative for patients who cannot have dental implants or who want an alternative to surgery.
