What are veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic procedure where a translucent covering is bonded to the front of your existing tooth or teeth to better its appearance.
You might choose to get veneers if your teeth:
• Are badly stained or discoloured
• Are chipped or broken
• Have large gaps between them
• Are misaligned, misshapen, or uneven
• Are heavily worn or broken down
Ceramic veneers are best for situations where multiple teeth require restoration. Composite bonded veneers are used in instances where you would like to repair a single tooth or fix discolouration.
How do veneers work?
Veneers work by mimicking the appearance of your real teeth in a way that changes their size, shape, colour or length.
A pain-free and minimally invasive procedure, veneers provide an alternative to crowns, bleaching and whitening your teeth.
The process of getting veneers
At your initial appointment, your dentist will inspect your teeth and have a discussion with you about what you wish to achieve and decide if ceramic veneers or composite bonded veneers are the best choices for you.
If you choose to proceed with veneers, your dentist will trim your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from the tooth or teeth where the veneers will be placed.
Composite bonded veneers can usually be affixed in a single visit. However, for ceramic veneers, the dentist will need to take a dental impression of your teeth and send the mould to a laboratory where your veneer will be made.
At the next appointment with your dentist, you should be able to trial your new veneer to ensure it fits well and matches colour-wise.
When you’re happy to go ahead, the dentist will shape your veneer and bond it to your existing teeth with cement, which is set using a beam of light.
What happens after my veneers procedure?
After you’ve had your veneers placed, you should avoid hard and chewy food because veneers may chip.
Your dentist will also want to see you again to ensure your veneers are fitting well and your gums are in good health.
In the meantime, you should continue brushing and flossing your teeth and maintaining good oral hygiene.
How long do veneers last?
Veneers are a permanent cosmetic procedure, but it’s likely they’ll need to be replaced eventually. While ceramic veneers are more long-lasting, composite bonded veneers should last for many years when they are well cared for.
