Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Few procedures create as much anxiety as teeth extraction. At L&R Dental, our dentists never take the recommendation to remove teeth lightly. We explore all other treatment options available before we recommend removing a tooth.

While you might feel anxious about your procedure and its impact on your smile, we want you to know that we provide comfortable teeth extractions in our Toowoomba surgery along with tooth-replacement options to complete your smile.

Why Do I Need My Tooth Extracted?

When tooth damage or disease occurs, we provide a number of restorative options to repair natural teeth and avoid a tooth extraction. Root canal therapy, crowns, and bonded fillings are all ways that we can protect teeth. Sometimes, however, restoration is impossible.

  • Teeth broken off at the gumline
  • Unsuccessful root canals
  • Problematic wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Unresolved pain
  • Bone loss
  • Full extractions for dentures

To determine the viability of a tooth, we will perform an evaluation and take x-rays. This way, we know your options and can explain all alternatives accurately. In some cases, we can place a dental implant at the same time we extract a tooth to avoid additional surgeries.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

For some people, wisdom teeth erupt without complications and, other than having to look after them carefully because of their location at the very back of the mouth, pose few health concerns.

For others, however, wisdom teeth grow in at odd angles, do not have enough space, or cause pain because of the pressure they put on other teeth. In these cases, removing them can protect your bite and restore a comfortable mouth.

We evaluate wisdom teeth in teenagers and young adults so that we can avoid any complications with the bite and overcrowding.

Post-Surgical Care

Caring for the extraction site will promote healing and improve comfort. It’s normal to feel discomfort for a few days after extraction. Our dentists will discuss pain management medication to make you more comfortable.

Fortunately, with the proper care, your mouth will heal quickly.

  • Avoid direct contact with your toothbrush and floss.
  • Rinse gently with warm water to remove food.
  • Eat softer foods and chew away from the healing site.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Don't drink from a straw for a few days.
  • Arrange your follow-up visit.

We will monitor how you heal and discuss tooth-replacement options for teeth other than wisdom teeth.

  • Dental implants
  • Dental bridge
  • Denture or partial denture
  • Implant-retained dentures

Tooth loss does not mean that you have to live with a gappy smile or miss out on the foods you love. Toowoomba dentists Dr Welsh, Dr Milford and Dr Ferguson will work with you on a solution that meets your needs.
